Decorating Your Home with Cane Furniture

Cane is a species of climbing plane, similar to a vine, which grows in abundance in the tropical forests of South East Asia. Indonesia is the single largest producer of Cane, worldwide. Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are other major cane producing countries. Other tropical regions such as Africa, Central America and Australia also have cane plantations.

A cane plant grows up to a height of 150 metres and even more. It is a solid structure, unlike bamboo, which is hollow. There are a number of different varieties within the cane family. In certain parts of the world, crane is also called rattan. The crane plant is normally ready for harvesting once a year and is am natural, renewable resource. However, some plantation owners get greedy and try to harvest them prematurely in the hope of making higher profits out of shorter growth cycles, which is an undesirable practice since it creates ecological imbalance and soil degradation.

Cane Industries are profitable business, since they cater to many different raw material needs of a variety of other industrial products. Cane furniture, cane baskets and a host of other products are produced by the cane industries. Since cane is solid, it has strength and can be used for many applications. Rounded cane poles are cut and used to make the frames of different kinds of furniture. They can be shaped into desired forms by a steaming process. A large stick or pole of crane is processed and cut into smaller pieces, depending on what end product the pieces are going to be used to manufacture. The crane can also be used to make a wicker, which is then weaved to the frame. ‘Wicker’ is a process of weaving.

Cane furniture is used, both indoors and outdoors, all over the world. It is particularly used as conservatory furniture in places of learning and in green houses, patios and on beaches. The furniture can be painted in different, attractive colours or varnished to give it the natural look.

The weaving of natural materials such as cane is a very old tradition. Even to this day, it is done by hand, not machines. Expert craftsmen continue to make the most elegant and exquisite items of furniture. Actually, cane products, including cane furniture was popular and commonly in use way back in the centuries old Egyptian and Roman Empires. The fact that they are so much in demand even today bears testimony to their beauty and practicality.
